Mr. & Mrs. Wiggins

Writer: Candace WellsCandace Wells

Updated: Feb 26, 2020

This week's WeddingCrushWednesday couple goes to Mr. & Mrs. Wiggins. Andreia and I met through our great friend and soror, Jessica, who was also featured earlier this year with her husband Steven. Andreia has always been a sweet individual and I was more than happy to interview her and her husband Devone about their wedding experience. The couple resides in the Hampton Roads area and has a beautiful family including their daughter and son. Devone works as a mental health counselor and Andreia is an RN. Similar to my husband and I, the couple had a little bun in the oven that wanted to be a part of the fun wedding festivities. Please take a moment to read and enjoy their Wedding Story.

How and when did you two meet?

"When we first met it was in 2004." -Andreia

"We met down at the Beach through a mutual friend." -Devone

"My best friend went to high school with Devone and introduced us while he was working down at the beach. He was trying to be cool like 'Oh who is your friend?' and my friend was like, 'She don't want you!' and that’s pretty much how we met." -Andreia

"No, she was trying to be fresh." -Devone

How long did you two date before you got engaged?

"Seven years." -Devone

"Girl it took him seven years." -Andreia

How did you know that Andreia was the one?

"I knew when I realized that I didn't want to spend another day without her." -Devone

How did you propose?

"I wrote down on a piece of paper some questions for her and basically said, 'Let's see how well you know me'. She answered all the questions correctly so then I started singing our favorite song, 'So High' by John Legend and that's how I proposed." -Devone

Did you cry Andreia?

"Yes, I did!" -Andreia

How long were you both engaged?

"It was like 3 months. Initially we were going to wait to have the wedding the following year, but our families were kind of like 'No, let's just do it now. You guys are about to have a baby' and that's how we ended up having it so fast. I was about 7 1/2 months pregnant when we got married." -Andreia

Wedding Date: July 5, 2014

Inside Ceremony (Devine Baptist Church, Chesapeake, Virginia) Inside Reception (San Lorenzo Spiritual Center, Virginia Beach, Virginia)

Wedding Colors: Coral and Silver/Grey

What was your inspiration for your color scheme?

"I was pregnant and it all happened kind of fast so when I went to David's Bridal, Jessica was with me, and I was just like 'Okay Jessica, find a dress in this style and whichever dress that you find that is your size then that's the one we're getting.' After she tried on the dresses, it ended up being the coral so that's what we went with. There was no thought behind it at all." -Andreia

Approximate Expense: Between $5K and $7K

What was your favorite or best memory of your wedding day?

"When I saw her walking down the aisle and they were actually playing that song that I sung to her the night I proposed and yes I did cry." -Devone

"My favorite memory was when I looked up and saw him balling crying. He had people wiping his face." -Andreia

What was your worst memory of your wedding day?

"I think that everything was perfect. I can't really think of anything that was really bad from that day. I did get upset once, because you know I was pregnant, so I was in my hormones and all of that. I will say I had a dress to change into and no one could find my dress so I did have a minor breakdown. I cried because I thought they loss my dress. My mom and Jessica ended up finding my dress so I was okay after that. That was the only thing that really upset me because I thought my dress was loss." -Andreia

"The wedding planner had got caught up in the ceremony and forgot to come get myself, the minister, and my best man. I actually missed my mom and my grandma coming in so I kind of missed that moment." -Devone

Would you say that your wedding day was everything that you expected, more, or less?

"I think that it was everything I expected." -Devone

"I think it was everything I expected especially with 3 months of planning. We had a very short time frame and I think the wedding planner did a great job putting everything together for 250 people. I actually think it was more than I expected just for that reason. I was impressed." -Andreia

What would you say was the most helpful during the planning process?

"I would say the planner because she truly did everything. Devone actually was a lot more involved with everything than I was." -Andreia

"I think my parents and her mom being able to help and give advice whenever we needed it. They were a major help." -Devone

What would you say was the most stressful part of the planning process?

"I think the guest list. I know a lot of people, so I had to cut the list and that was the most stressful part for me." -Devone

"I would agree that the list was stressful, but also I would say the wedding itself. Being pregnant and trying to plan a wedding in such a short time was just stressful to me. For me I just wanted to show up because I didn't want to deal with it." -Andreia

If you could get married all over again, would you and would you do it the same way?

"Yes I would do it all over again. I would not do it the same because I would not be pregnant and that way I could enjoy myself. I would be able to drink and wear a different dress and just really enjoy myself. Then again, after thinking about all the money that we spent and everything that was involved I may want to spend the money on something else. What would you say Devone?" -Andreia

"No I wouldn't do it all over again. You couldn't recapture that moment so I would leave it the way it was." -Devone

Do you plan or have you talked about renewing your vows?

"Yes, I would like to renew our vows at 5 years, but he told me that I needed to wait until 10 years. I think that we would do something small and just for our immediate family." -Andreia

"I don't really want to get married again or renew our vows." -Devone

What would you say was the most wasteful purchase?

"I would say the alcohol." -Devone

"Why would you say the alcohol? We used the alcohol." -Andreia

"That’s true. Well then I would probably say the decorations for the table because it seemed like nobody took them anyway." -Devone

"You mean the party favors." -Andreia

"Yeah, the party favors." -Devone

"Yeah, it was a little box that had our name, initials, and wedding date on it with Hershey Kisses inside. I would probably agree with that and say they were probably the most wasteful." -Andreia

Where there any pictures/poses that you wish your photographer would have captured, but did not?

"I think he did a good job, but I feel like with the bridal party he could have done a little more with us doing different poses. The bridal party pictures were pretty basic, so I wish he was a little more creative with that." -Andreia

"He didn't get us doing the Atomic Dog." -Devone

What would be the best advice you would give to a couple planning their wedding and also for them to remember while they start their new marriage?

"For the wedding I would say to be mindful on how you are spending your money. For me I feel like some people spend all this money on these 20 and 30 thousand dollar weddings and it's not even... 'all that'. I would say just be mindful on what you're putting your money into and what's more important." -Andreia

"For the wedding I would say that if the bride and groom have a plan then try to stick to that plan. Don't go outside of the initial plan all because you start to get this advice and that advice." -Devone

"I would say that communication is important for a marriage. Try to talk to one another and try to understand where the other person is coming from. That is something that takes time and that you will continuously work on." -Andreia

"I would say in a marriage you should learn to pick your battles." -Devone
